Well, we won one game at least as the Bulls travelled to Lilleshall at the weekend to take part in the first Premiership wheelchair rugby weekend of the new season. GBWR’s competition manager will have been on tenterhooks following the Udders non-attendacne at their previous competition, but with a clear weather forecast and positive vibes within the team following a series of record breaking attedances at training sessions the Bulls were eager to start their new campaign!
The team, listed below, travelled to Lilleshall on Friday night relaxed and focused, ready to welcome their German Hero, Marco, who had been frustratingly delayed on his flight over. With the team settled in and attendance confirmed the event organisers breathed a sigh of releif, the Bull’s were ready.
The opening game of the season was between ourselves and the Hawks *cough, cough* sorry, GB Talent, and this was our chance to confirm our position in the league. The Bull’s were strong, but a lack of connectivity could be seen between the players with sloppy play slowing the game down. The Hawks *cough, cough* sorry, Talent, pushed the Bulls hard but after a solid performance the Bulls sealed the deal and came away with the win, 53-48.
The second game of the day was against Seb Verdin *cough, cough* sorry, Leicester Tigers. The scoreline as always looked worst than the actual game. Coach Extraordinaire, Jamie, likes to confuse the opposition with a false sense of dominance, but in true Bulls style leaves it too late to rectify with the final whistle approaching – it’s all part of the plan, lose the first game so they over-look the actual threat next time and then pounce! Final score ended up being 53-39 to Seb *cough, cough* sorry, Tigers.
The Bulls regathered and rested for the evening but soon spotted a problem. Poor planning by Coach Extraordinare Jamie, meant we would be without our German Hero, Marco, for the latter quarters of our final game due to his return flight – bollocks!
After some sweet negotiations the schedule for the following day was shuffled around and the Bull’s had a plan in place. They were to play London Storm first, and then “play” West Coast Crash in their final game of the day in a forfeitted game to avoid an embarrasing scoreline being posted to socials!
The Bulls and Storm took to the court and battled it out in a fiercly competed game, the Bulls took an early lead and looked set to be the stronger team in the first quarter but Storms experience and Aran Phipps’ speed bestowing sweat band helped them claw themselves back into the game and finish the job, 48-40.
The final game against West Coast Crash was “played” in good spirits with both teams running their lines, the Bulls held strong and only allowed Crash to score one try – an amazing acheivment really! Crash “played” valiently and never lost focus as the Bulls defended wave after wave of their attack, the game “ended” with a scoreline of 1-0 to Crash.
The team were pleased overall with their Premiership wheelchair rugby tournament and come away with plenty of area’s to work on, mainly the importance of booking a later return flight!
The Bulls Udders are up next as they play in the second installment of the Division One competition in January where their first target is to actually show up to the event! Once on court, we should have some fiesty encounters. See you then!
Moooooo.
